New resolution

My mind feels like it's going to waste a bit, like it's underused and certainly not challenged enough. I read quite a lot, though often my book of choice is a good fiction. I just finished reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and got so fed up with the horrible text about rape and murders that I've determined that it's the first and last book I'll read of the series. The New Internationalist is my bathroom companion (yes, I like reading in the bathroom) though I'm also a subscriber to this artsy Australian magazine called Frankie, which is more aesthetically pleasing than intelligent. And I try doing sudoku whenever I can get my hands on it. I'm nowhere near good, but I'm practicing. I'm also listening to these daily Philosopher's Notes that Peter sent me, which are great for the walk to and from work.

Anyway, all of the additions above were justifications to make me feel like my brain is somewhat productive, but really it's not. I find that I'm much less active than I used to be, so it's time for action and resolutions--ones that will work, and that I have the motivation to stick to. So I'm making a resolution to write once a day to try to get the creative juices reactivated.

Day one. I spend much of my socializing time thinking that I don't have much to report on, thinking that what I've been up to isn't of much consequence. But when I think about it (and when I have conversation partners who genuinely want to know what I've been up to) I realize that things are happening and that life is pretty full. Please accept my apologies ahead of time for lack of coherence of cohesion in the writing. It's re-starting. :)

My parents came to visit last month, which was quite as landmark as my relationship with my parents (dad and stepmom) is a strange beast at the best of times. And they haven't done much international traveling, so a collection of long flights to come down to see me is a pretty big commitment. I'm not sure how much of their trip I'll write about as I know my dad reads this and it's not necessarily fair to him to find out how I felt about that trip by reading it on my blog rather than hearing it from me directly. Suffice it to say it was an interesting visit and it is certainly a big event in our lives.

A few weeks after their trip, Marcus and I went to New Zealand. I'll do more debrief more on that when I have access to my photos. In quick summary, it was a fantastic trip with beautiful scenery, fantastic wildlife, friendly and knowledgeable tour guides, good food, and great company. Marcus and I travel very well together, with seeing new places a very high priority in our lives. And we really enjoy spending time with each other so taking a break from the world and going off into our own little world is fantastic, and very much looked forward to.

And last night we went to see Eddie Vedder in concert at the State Theatre downtown. I wouldn't recognize the man if I passed by him in the street (sacrilege, I know) and I've never paid much attention to Pearl Jame. That being said, the concert last night was pretty amazing, and I have a newfound respect and appreciation for their music. He puts a lot of feeling into the lyrics and music, as well as his performance. There was a good relationship with the crowd (even if it was the most vocally obnoxious crowd I've seen at a concert) and kept things light and flowing. There were no tired yawns or sidelong glances to check the time.

Yesterday also marked our first thick shakes at a place called Micky's over in Paddington, where some friends were lovely enough to introduce us to the goodness. The shake is almost Wendy's Frosty thick, to where your straw buckles under the suctioned pressure. And not only is the shake texture itself wonderful and creamy, but these shakes are flavoured according to the other food smashed within. Marcus and I tried the Mars (think Milky Way) cheesecake shake, which had chocolate base and smashed up cheesecake within. Crazy delicious, and they've smashed up the cheesecake (cheesepie) enough so that it will go up the straw. We also tried the honeycomb/chocolate and the sticky date pudding. Sticky date was the winner. Unbelievable, I know, that a shake involving fruit would beat one in involving cheesecake. Such were the results.

That's me for the day. A good start to my new writing resolution.
