Happy International Children's Day!!

As with most communications, this is a few days late. International Children's Day falls on the 1st of June, so at least I'm only a few days tardy. Actually, this year I ended up celebrating a day early, so why don't we just say Happy International Children's Week?
A few weeks ago, I was popping bubble wrap and discovered that a co-worker was also a bubble wrap popping fan. I proceeded to tell her that there was a Bubble Wrap day and that at one of my old offices, I tied up little squares of bubble wrap and left them at everyone's desks in celebration. She got so excited by it that we decided to find all the fun holiday days and make up an entire calendar of them. Naturally the first fun, non-traditional holiday I could think of was Kids' Day.

Back in the day, the Ferguson family celebrated all three family holidays--mother's day, father's day, and kids' day. I'm not sure where it came from and really can't recall what we did to celebrate it. The one thing that remains in the memory--giant M&M cookies. Every year mom would make each child their very own colorful, oh-so-delightful, giant M&M cookie. I was a tiny thing at the time, so the cookie was probably the size of my head (and those cookies didn't shrink according to child size--that would certainly lead to unhappy children, especially this one who's a firm believer in equality in all senses, even when her eyes are bigger than her stomach--a trait I fear I have not overcome). It was certainly a fantastic day to look forward to each year, but at some point with the passing of time the holiday faded away.

Until this year. We decided to bring it back, my co-worker and I. I wore a black and white gingham shirt, pink argyle-heart socks, a little red beaded necklace with a picture of a cow, and braids (I got likened to a farmer's daughter by more than one person). She wore pigtails, a bright multi-colored dress, bright tights, and bright make-up. I brought the giant cookies. As soon as her eyes lighted on the cookies, she and another gal from our team decided that they were "development team" cookies and they should be guarded and eaten only amongst our team. (Classic kid style--more for me, less for you!) That lasted for a few hours, but I had literally made upwards of 30 massive cookies so I went around spreading the love one person at a time.

Knock, knock. "Hi there, happy International Children's Day (a day early). Kids' Day is actually tomorrow, but I made the cookies last night so we're celebrating today. Would you like a cookie?"

I appeared to be a door to door solicitor, and a few people thought I was selling cookies for some children's charity. I laughed and explained that this was just a bit of cookie love. No payment necessary.

And I must say, those cookies were as delectable as they could be. Soft cookies are definitely the best, but I feared for the form of a giant soft cookie. Buuuuuut since chocolate chip cookies are my specialty (I can't even imagine how many times I've made these cookies), they turned out top-notch.
Happy Children's Day!

Love,
Tina and Marcus

J'adore M&M cookies!!! If only I would have known, I would have made a batch myself. There's always next year...and next week. :)
