Slowly turning into a foody

I love food. This fondness has been increasing steadily over the past two years and it has been manifesting itself on a regular basis. Even outside of the oven!

This morning I decided pancakes sounded really good, so we broke out my cookbook from Jessi and whipped up a batch of pancakes (ever conscious of the necessary additions of vanilla and cinnamon to the recipe). While I was whipping up the batter, Marcus set to cutting up some strawberries purchased amidst more apartment hunting yesterday. We were walking about wasting time in between viewings and real estate agent visits when we passed a guy sitting on the side of a very busy sidewalk surrounded by punnets of strawberries. Random. I began to avert eye contact and try to walk by, as per usual when people try to invade my personal space and sell me something on the street. But as we walked by there was no forceful sales pitch. Instead, a very small, unconvinced voice drawled out a hesitant, "Strawberries?" I was so surprised at the laid-back approach that I looked up to see look directly into his almost skeptical face and he non-commitally added, "From the Sunshine Coast," at which point Marcus and I replied in unison, "Maybe," with a smile and a shrug of the shoulders. When we walked past him the second time, he offered us a sample of the goods and we bought ourselves some fresh strawberries and got a genuine "thank you". Nice.

Anyway, back to the pancakes. After cutting up our delicious and somewhat local berries, Marcus set to mixing up some molasses-walnut butter. The man does like his sauces, and I've been wanting to try some of the flavored butters in my cookbook so this was the perfect opportunity. After he finished whipping it up, he gave me a taste and....wow. The butter was delicious, sweet, and just as good as the passion fruit flavored butter I had with banana bread a few weeks ago. Yuuuuuum! The Heart Foundation would have been disappointed at the generous smear of butter that landed on my pancakes. It was too good not to, I even licked the butter knife before dropping it into the sink with the rest of the dirty dishes. If we ever have weekend guests (that are food-appreciators) I think they would love breakfast at our place. I just love making some kind of scrumptious breakfast on a Sunday morning. There's nothing pressing to be done and the whole day awaits molding. Warm and delectable scents wafting through the kitchen make me feel like a child, almost giddy with anticipation. Sometimes that part is better than eating the finished product... Scones, pancakes, breakfast wraps, omelets...there's something immensely gratifying in putting together your own food, especially when it turns out well.

I have to be careful about not making entirely too delicious food all the time, because ever since getting hooked on Peruvian food I've had more difficulty with stopping eating before I stuff myself. :) Boring sandwiches are still a lunch staple for a reason.

Have I mentioned that we've taken to making our own pizza dough and thus making lots (or as Australians would say, heaps) of pizza? We made an absurdly good breakfast pizza two weekends ago that made me stamp my foot in approval. BBQ sauce, mozzarella, bacon, eggs, and ricotta cheese with rosemary. I am simply unable to describe the goodness.

We also made rice paper rolls for dinner a few weeks ago and although Marcus isn't a huge fan, I think it's an entertaining, interactive (and healthy!) meal. Vermicelli noodles, fresh veggies, maybe some peppermint or basil leaves and sweet chilli dipping sauce and we've got ourselves a gourmet little roll. Although I need to work on my wrapping skills, my rolls are always droopy. Marcus, on the other hand, well, let's take into consideration that he's a much neater eater than I am and voila! perfectly rolled rice paper roll on the first try. >: - *

I'm probably just writing about food because I had a huge breakfast and decided to stick with just two meals today, but now I'm getting hungry. I've snacked on my favorite nut/berry snack mix (it's pretty awesome--almonds, walnuts, raisins, goji berries and blueberries) but it's not quite cutting it. I will stay away from the cookies...if only because I already ate one of the macaroons I made last night...
