Fundraising dinner




Our biggest fundraising event of the year went down a few weeks ago. It was a fundraising dinner with many of our top donors, lots of well-known Australians, actors, personalities, etc. Our Artistic Directors were there (Cate decked out in Armani as per usual--well, he's our patron and the dinner was held in his honor, so that all makes sense), Hugo Weaving (Mr Smith from The Matrix) was there as well as the Olympic gold medalist swimmer, Ian Thorpe. It's a pretty impressive event, actually, pulled off by two of my lovely co-workers with the help of the rest of our development department. I just thought I'd share some pictures of the event because it was certainly the most posh fundraising event I've ever been to. (Err, worked.) It was held on the stage of Sydney Theatre, our largest theatre.

They made it snow in the theatre. I don't know if you can see from the pictures, but it was pretty amazing. Though I missed the snow as I was ushering people in, running across the road to buy pizza for the band, and alerting others that the Hungarian director from our biggest show of the year decided to show up unannounced with his interpreter...so we needed to find an extra seat... it was a crazy night, but the guests enjoyed themselves and we raised over half a million dollars from the one event. It's fun to be involved in this kind of work. Perhaps a little excessive, but it's interesting to see how the other side live. :)

What? Why didn't the band get any of the fancy food? Think we are going to get our Christmas tree today! Gonna saw it down ourselves. Love you babe!

Last day in Kuching (Borneo)

Fun fact. I quit my job. Or rather, I'm taking a pause. When I said there were a lot of reasons I was ending my contract early, it was true. Around three years' worth of reasons, stress, and feeling undervalued, I figured it was time to call it a day. At least for a while. I want a few months to just breathe and not have to wake up at 5am or 6am. Or go to bed at a grandma hour. Or go to bed without Marcus!! Or feel unseen.  That leaves a significant vacuum in my days, one that I'm not unfamiliar with, but I'm trying to approach it differently this time. I'm trying to value this time, rather than be scared of it. I'm usually scared at how long my time in between jobs is going to last, and I stress about whether and when someone is going to hire me. Jamu in Jogja

When did I first learn about jamu? Eat Pray Love? Was it when we got married in Bali? My curiosity was piqued then. In the intervening years my interest in plant medicine has soared, and since we moved to SG where there's a significant population from Indonesia, and my proximity to jamu became imminently closer, I've been even more curious about jamu.  I stumbled across a jamu workshop as I searched online for things to do during a solo workcation to Yogyakarta. In amongst the batik and silver jewelry making workshops (is this place up my alley or what) was a jamu making workshop. Booked it quicksmart. Naturally I was the only student in my class today, made all the more significant as I discovered that mine was the very first tour these folks have done since the pandemic began!
